Ingo vom Moorehaus

Owner: Russ Jennings, Alaska

Aug. 2005: Attached are a few pictures of our first Ptarmigan hunt of the year. These were taken one hour into our hunting day when I took Ingo back to the truck for water (hot hunting weather – 65 plus degrees and thick smoke from wildfires). It was an interesting day of hunting as the birds were in flocks up to ten birds each and would not hold still. Ingo would go on point and the birds would run out from under him, so I would trot a 30 yard arc around the birds and have Ingo ease forward and re-establish point, sometimes more than once. Finally when trapped between us they had no choice but to fly. Being a young dog he can barely contain himself when birds are flying and running all around him but I’m sure more work on wild birds will settle him down; they won’t tolerate anything but good manners from a pointing dog if they are going to be shot over him.

You may recall when I was considering a DD as my next hunting partner; one of my concerns was how the breed would do as a waterfowl dog. I won’t know for two months how well he will handle cold-air/water-temperature waterfowl hunting situations, but I can tell you that near freezing glacial waters don’t phase him in the least. Twice a week I work him on live ducks, both searching for planted blind ducks and tracking over open water of ducks that have been drug with a fishing pole and released. This dog is good. He loves the water work as much as if not more than any other type of training. I believe he has the potential to be as good a waterfowl retriever as any dog I have owned.

Ingo runs his HZP in Logan, UT on October 7th – 9th.

"Rana"

Owner: Billy Griswold, Arizona

Billy is the author of "How to Buy a Gun Dog"

06/23/02: Hard to believe Rana will be a year old on Independence Day. He's come a long way. He was so easy to teach the forced retrieve. He's whistle trained (come, whoa, down, and release), does all sorts of stupid pet tricks, and we're working on hand signals for directions (he already knows sit, down, whoa, and release hand signals) so he can do his blind retrieves in the fall test. His pointing and tracking still need some fine-tuning, but the heat and lack of humidity has made it tough to work on them this summer. We're doing yard work on steadiness to flush with dead pigeons right now, and dove season will help polish off steadiness to shot and fall. Quail starts back in October, but it's not looking good for them this year--we're nearly 3" short on rainfall right now, and they really needed the winter rains to raise families. He's an exceptional dog, and we never go anywhere without hearing things like "he's so handsome," "he's so smart," and "he's so obedient." In short, he's a joy to have around. The DD has exceeded all my expectations of what a dog should be: a loyal companion, a hard-working hunter, and a great house pet!
11/14/03: Hi Guys, All is well here in AZ, and it's looking to be a good season. Still waiting for better scenting weather; Rana seems to be able to find cripples and dead birds in nearly any conditions, but live birds are really tough in the dry desert. The attached photos were taken after an Arizona blue grouse hunt in the White Mountains near New Mexico early this month. While Rana wasn't exactly sure what we were looking for and didn't contribute any points, he had great fun trying to figure out what we were after. Karin was without the benefit of a dog when she jumped hers shortly after, but she managed to kill both birds in the pair. While we only found three birds, they're considered a rare trophy in our state. We'll be taking five days in early December to hunt quail (Mearn's mostly, but we can find all 3 species where we're headed), dove, and waterfowl. Hopefully, the tight-holding Mearn's will provide better opportunity to see Rana point, since I've yet to kill a bird over a point.
01/24/05: One with Karin from the dove opener and two from a White Mountain waterfowl and squirrel hunt. Of the three ducks in the photo, I only shot two. The third is a hen Rana tracked up into the brush and retrieved on his own while searching for a downed drake. I can only assume someone else had crippled the hen sometime earlier (she was in good overall condition, so hadn’t been down long), she’d hauled out to spend the night off the water, and Rana caught her scent trail when we went around the pond to find my drake. He found the drake in cattails a few minutes later. I was pretty impressed. Having a dog saves $$ on steel shot! Fortunately, I didn’t shoot so well that “Rana’s” bird put us over our limit… The final picture is neat, but you can’t see the whole story. Rana’s motivation to jump is a shot Abert’s squirrel that’s literally clinging to an overhead branch by one foot before it dropped out of the tree. He couldn’t wait to retrieve it. He was absolutely going nuts while the foot relaxed and the squirrel dropped. Talk about drive to retrieve!

19 Jan 2006 - Forrest, It was my first day in the snow! Boy is the snow fun. I slid around for awhile because it is slippery stuff. I tried to bite it but it doesn't taste like Eukanuba! I tried to bury my head in it and it is cold. I like rolling in it. I like my new dog house because it is warm and dry on the windy snowy days. I am in the John's house a lot but spending more time in the outside kennel. I here its called transition. I think I am almost house broken. John and Carol take me for lots of walks. Sometimes I find this hard stuff that looks and smells like water but it is a new kind of rock called "ice". I hope you and the family are well.  Minka

Britta vom Duck River

Owner: Howard Pound, GA

Dec 6, 2005:
She did great on the Arkansas trip. 4 of us got 114 ducks .... she retrieved 90% of them.
The outfitter and another big hunter made serious inquires into her pups. She also did a super blood track. 1 ½ miles long. Had the Game Warden, Owner of the duck camp and guy who shot the deer with us.
They call her "The Wonder Dog" out there. One guy made a smart comment at supper one night, with all the hunters around, about Wonder Dog and where was her cape. Britta was laying on the floor beside while I ate and I quietly reached down and petted her head, took a second then looked back at him and said Britta only pulls out her cap when I am in danger!
He looked at me not know what to think then I started smiling and everybody in the place broke out laughing.

Molly vom Moorehaus
Owner: Charlie Martinez, Texas

12/13/05: Enclosed are some photos of molly with her first deer track. We have been working on 125 yard rabbit drags to almost perfection. She is one heck of a pup with an exceptional nose. On Sunday evening December 11th a friend of mine called me to see if my nephew or my good friend could help him try and track a buck he had shot late in the evening with their Drahthaar dogs I had talked to him about on an earlier conversation. He told me they had tracked the deer till they lost the blood trail. My nephew and my friend both had family commitments and it was pretty late. I told him just to let the deer lay overnight and I would help him in the morning and I would take my pup "Molly" to help us. My son and I got to the ranch the next morning about eight a.m. He took us to the location where he had shot the deer and found blood on the ground. I brought Molly to the area and pointed on the ground and she put her nose to the ground and takes off with me right behind her. For the first 100 yards the buck was leaving a pretty good blood trail and then it started to taper off. This area is very sandy so the blood was hard to see after 12 or so hours. At times I had to stop her to see if she was on the right track and low and behold she was dead on with just very few specks of blood every 20 to thirty yards. We got to a mesquite tree mott and she found a good sized pool of blood on the ground and something caught my eye to the left and there lay the deer still alive! I pulled her away and we finished off the deer with buck shot. We could not believe it, my friend couldn't believe it. We all grabbed her and hugged her and let her tug on the deer. as the pictures show. Forrest I am so proud of my pup especially her being only 14 weeks old! We tracked this deer for almost a mile. I expected to find only the carcass if anything or nothing at all due to the number of coyotes we have in our area. This is a prime example of why these dogs go through all the testing and why the VDD assesses the quality of breeding standards.
Forrest thanks for your spectacular breeding program your kennel has provided. Thanks to Gilly and Uncas for a great pup. Charlie Martinez

Debbi vom Moorehaus

Owner: Ken Dinn, Newfoundland, Canada

07/03/02: Debbi is doing real nice. She is really starting to develop lately. Her search is coming along good, she is showing great co-operation. If I have bumpers out in the field she will find them and bring them to hand all on her own. Her point is staunch and stylish, just working on extending it. She is started swimming and will retrieve bumpers from swimming depth water to hand. Her tracking is fantastic. She has tracked rabbits for as much as 300-400 yards through the woods and she will give tongue all the way on hot scent. SUPER NOSE!! Her coat and conformation at least at this point are fantastic. I am looking forward to testing her in the VJP.

09/24/05: Thought that you would like to see a couple of pictures of Debbi. One is with her some ptarmigan and spruce grouse taken this past week and the other is from yesterday morning with her (on the right) and Bob and some ptarmigan. She was kind of tired as this was the fourth day in a row for her!!!! Enjoy.
Ken

11/22/05: Forrest here is a picture of Debbi with a moose....... she blood tracked one a couple of days ago for 5 km (I kept the distance on the GPS). Then she pointed 3 grouse on the way out !!!! Enjoy. Ken
